Antisemitism in English schools review
Overview
An independent review led by Sir David Bell found that 60% of Jewish students in England have experienced antisemitic abuse while attending school. The report noted a lack of confidence in school authorities, with fewer than half of students who witnessed such incidents believing administrators would take action. To address these issues, the review suggested that schools “consider the appropriateness” of certain political identifiers to prevent teachers from imposing personal views on students.
Following the report, the UK government accepted 27 recommendations. These measures include implementing dedicated antisemitism training for staff, improving incident recording, and encouraging schools to adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) working definition of antisemitism. The rollout has faced scrutiny regarding how victimization data is calculated, and the country’s largest teachers’ union has expressed pushback regarding the implementation of the measures.
