UK Government announces major housing and homelessness funding in Budget

Prime Minister Andy Burnham and Chancellor John Healey have unveiled significant financial commitments in the upcoming Autumn Budget aimed at addressing homelessness and housing shortages. The government will double its investment in tackling rough sleeping, adding £432 million to bring the total commitment to £874 million. This funding is intended to provide a safe route off the streets for individuals by Christmas and sustain support through the end of the current Parliament.

To address the housing crisis, the Budget includes more than £1 billion for social and affordable housing, pushing the total for the government’s 10-year programme beyond £40 billion. Additionally, the 'Your First Home' scheme for new-build properties will see increased eligibility, with household income caps raised to £110,000 outside London and £140,000 within London.

In a move toward decentralization, the government will provide an initial £285 million in transitional funding to local leaders next year. A new £1.5 billion borrowing facility for mayors is also planned to begin in 2028, intended to provide capital for local infrastructure, housing, and employment projects without constant reliance on Whitehall.
