UK Labour Government Expands Free Breakfast Clubs and Caps School Uniform Costs

The UK Labour government announced six education measures to take effect in September 2026. 2,700 new free breakfast clubs will be opened, raising the total to more than 2,700 sites and serving over 680,000 children – an increase from 300,000 today. Parents at 1,400 schools will receive information on the programme, and three Isle of Wight schools are among the latest to join.

Schools must now limit the number of branded uniform items they can require, allowing families to purchase basic clothing from any retailer. The policy is expected to save families up to £1,000 a year, combining up to £450 from free breakfast clubs and up to £500 from expanded free school meals for households on Universal Credit.

Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson said, "No parent should have to choose between a summer day out to the beach and kitting their child out for school." The government also confirmed the largest ever expansion of funded childcare, saving families using the full 30‑hour entitlement an average of £8,000 per child per year, and launched the Best Start Improvement Coalition to support local family hubs.
