UK Government invests £7.3 million in sustainable aviation research

The UK Government has announced a £7.3 million investment to accelerate sustainable aviation technologies. The funding will be allocated to eight British companies developing electric and hydrogen‑powered aircraft, including projects by BETA Technologies and Vertical Aerospace. The programme aims to fast‑track low‑carbon propulsion, sustainable aviation fuels and the integration of electric vertical take‑off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, often called flying taxis, into existing airport operations. Up to £3.2 million will support the two lead firms, while the remainder contributes to a broader £43 million package for future aviation technologies and the necessary airport infrastructure such as charging and safety systems. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said the initiative will bring “the next generation of flight” closer to reality, create skilled jobs and help the UK meet its net‑zero emissions target.
