Europe faces widespread drought and desertification crisis

Europe is facing widespread drought and desertification, with significant impacts on agriculture, water security, and river levels. A report from the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre indicates that 52.92% of Spanish territory is affected by desertification, the highest rate in the EU. Across the continent, approximately half of Europe’s land area is experiencing drought conditions, with major rivers such as the Loire, Po, Rhine, and Danube reaching record-low levels.

In the United Kingdom, the government has announced a £65 million support package for farmers to mitigate the effects of prolonged dry weather and record-low July rainfall. This funding includes £50 million for the Sustainable Farming Incentive 2026 and up to £15 million to assist in the development of on-farm reservoirs. Prime Minister Andy Burnham described the period as likely the most difficult summer for British farming in a generation.

In addition to agricultural concerns, the drought has sparked criticism regarding water infrastructure in the UK. Residents have highlighted issues such as significant water loss from leaks and a lack of investment in new reservoirs. Meanwhile, the combination of heat and dryness has also increased the risk of wildfires across various regions, including Andalusia in Spain and parts of England.
