UK health agencies urge organ donation registration

During Organ Donation Week, health agencies across the United Kingdom are urging citizens to register their organ donation decisions on the NHS Organ Donor Register and discuss those wishes with their families.

In Northern Ireland, 156 people are currently waiting for transplants, contributing to a UK-wide waiting list of over 8,700 people. Data indicates that nine people die every week in the UK while waiting for a transplant. Health officials noted a decline in family consent rates; in Northern Ireland, rates fell from 79% in 2020/21 to 64% last year, mirroring a UK-wide drop from 67% to 57%.

Experts emphasize that while laws have moved toward an opt-out system, family consent remains vital. Families support donation 90% of the time when they are aware of the deceased's decision, but this support drops to approximately 50% when the decision is unknown. Between April 2021 and March 2026, over 700 potential donations across the UK did not proceed due to family uncertainty, resulting in an estimated 2,127 missed transplant opportunities.
