UK heatwave triggers amber warnings, health alerts and safety measures

The Met Office has issued an amber extreme‑heat warning for large parts of England, the Midlands and Wales, forecasting temperatures of up to 35 °C on Tuesday‑Wednesday and warning that the June temperature record could be broken. The warning, in force from 1 am on 22 June to 11:59 pm on 23 June, also notes high humidity and the possibility of isolated thunderstorms.

The UK Health Security Agency has upgraded heat‑health alerts to amber for areas including Essex and the South West, warning of a rise in deaths among older people and those with pre‑existing conditions. Public advice urges households to carry water, sunscreen, hats, torches and batteries, while Cornwall Council will start bin collections earlier to protect crews, schools have asked pupils to bring refillable water bottles, and the RNLI cautions about cold‑water shock despite the hot weather.
