UK heatwave drives fridge safety warnings and dietary tips
Across the United Kingdom, a heatwave has pushed daytime temperatures to around 35 °C, causing household refrigerators to work harder to keep food cold. Appliance specialists advise Britons to check their fridge temperature, aim for a setting near 2 °C if possible, and keep the doors closed, avoid overcrowding and place hot food outside the fridge until it cools. Adjusting the thermostat and ensuring proper air flow can help prevent spoilage during the prolonged heat.
Nutrition experts also recommend adapting meals to the heat. They suggest limiting protein‑rich cooking that generates additional body heat, using energy‑efficient appliances such as air fryers or slow cookers, and focusing on fruit, vegetables and other water‑rich foods. Increased fluid intake, monitoring urine colour and staying hydrated are highlighted as key steps to avoid dehydration and heat‑related illness.
