UK Met Office issues amber extreme heat alert for 51 areas

The Met Office has issued an amber "extreme heat" warning covering 51 counties across England and Wales, effective from 1 am on 22 June until 11:59 pm on 23 June. Temperatures are expected to reach the mid‑30 °C, with some locations forecast to top 34 °C, prompting warnings of widespread impacts on people and infrastructure.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) simultaneously issued an amber heat‑health alert for the same regions, indicating an increased demand on health and social‑care services and heightened risk for vulnerable groups, especially those over 65 or with underlying conditions. Travel disruptions, power‑supply strain and equipment failures are also foreseen.

Authorities have advised the public to stay hydrated, avoid outdoor activity between 11 am‑3 pm, keep curtains closed, and seek shade. Drivers are urged to carry water, snacks, sunscreen, medication, a first‑aid kit and chargers, with the AA and RAC highlighting the risk of vehicle breakdowns in high temperatures.
