UK heatwave drives Octopus Energy demand curbs and shows low fan running costs
Octopus Energy sent a heat‑wave bulletin to its 1.8 million UK customers, asking them to shift electricity use away from the 7:30 pm‑8:30 pm peak period. Participants in the programme can earn 415 OctoPoints (about 52 p) per kilowatt‑hour saved, delivering up to 4.5 GWh of flexible demand through smart devices such as home batteries and electric vehicles.
Separate analysis of household energy use during the same heatwave shows that running a standard electric fan overnight adds only a few pennies to the bill – roughly 8 p for a desk fan, 11 p for a tower fan and 14‑24 p for larger pedestal fans over an eight‑hour sleep period. By contrast, a portable air‑conditioning unit can cost over £3 per night, or more than £25 per week.
Both pieces highlight how British households are managing soaring temperatures while keeping electricity costs low, with utilities incentivising off‑peak usage and simple appliances remaining cost‑effective.
