UK heatwave subsides with sharp temperature drop

The Met Office announced that the June heatwave across the United Kingdom is ending, forecasting temperature falls of up to 19 °C in some regions. London is expected to be around 21 °C, the West Midlands 18 °C, Glasgow 15 °C and parts of Northern Ireland 13 °C, with an amber extreme‑heat warning remaining in parts of the southeast.

The UK Health Security Agency warned that people taking certain medications – including diuretics, beta‑blockers and antidepressants such as citalopram, fluoxetine or sertraline – are at heightened risk of heat‑related illness. The agency advised that these drugs can impair the body’s ability to cool itself, increasing the chance of heat exhaustion, dehydration or heat stroke.

Google searches for seasonal affective disorder rose 285 % during the heatwave, prompting health experts to highlight “summer SAD” symptoms such as irritability, low energy and changes in appetite. Recommendations include staying hydrated, keeping cool, maintaining regular sleep routines and a diet rich in vitamins and minerals.

Regional forecasts show cooler weather returning to Surrey, Greater Manchester and other areas, with lows in the mid‑teens and chances of rain later in the week. A separate forecast predicts another five‑day heatwave for early July, but the immediate focus is on the rapid cooling and associated health guidance.
