UK heatwave forces dozens of schools to close or shorten days

A severe heatwave across the United Kingdom, with temperatures projected to reach 38‑40 °C, has prompted widespread school disruptions. Hundreds of schools in counties such as Somerset, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire, Hampshire and east London boroughs have either closed completely, dismissed pupils early, or relaxed uniform rules to protect staff and students. The Department for Education notes that attendance remains important but advises leaders to ensure safety and comfort.

Union officials from NASUWT and GMB have warned that the Met Office’s red weather warning could trigger full or partial closures on Wednesday and Thursday, urging immediate risk assessments. Health agencies anticipate increased strain on services and a rise in heat‑related deaths, especially among the elderly. The extreme heat and humidity are also expected to impact transport, power and water supplies, affecting daily life beyond schools.
