UK heatwave guidance urges employers to protect staff

The Met Office issued a red heat‑health alert for six English regions with temperatures forecast to exceed 37 °C. While UK law sets no upper limit for workplace temperature, employers retain a duty of care under health‑and‑safety regulations. Guidance from the NHS, ACAS and the Health and Safety Executive advises organisations to update risk assessments, provide adequate ventilation, fans or air‑conditioning, and ensure free cold drinking water. Staff should be encouraged to stay hydrated, wear lightweight clothing, and take regular breaks, especially outdoors, with shaded rest areas and flexible working hours to avoid peak heat. Employers must also consider vulnerable employees—including those with pre‑existing health conditions—and may need to offer reasonable adjustments or remote work where possible.
