UK heatwave prompts fan‑cleaning advice and challenge to air‑conditioning restrictions

As a heatwave sweeps the United Kingdom, consumer experts warn that dusty electric fans can worsen indoor air quality and trigger asthma attacks. Former science teacher Sam Morris advises, "It's wise to dust and vacuum before you set up your fan for summer," recommending a quick wipe‑down of blades and vents before use.

At the same time, Britain’s Conservative Party has pledged to overturn the de‑facto ban on air‑conditioning in new homes, a regulation introduced under former housing secretary Robert Jenrick. The party says the rule, set out in Approved Document O, forces developers to rely on passive cooling even when temperatures rise. Shadow housing secretary Sir James Cleverly criticised the policy, stating, "Robert Jenrick devised an effective ban on air conditioning..." The Conservatives aim to remove the restriction to better equip future housing for hotter summers.
