UK heatwave prompts widespread school closures

A rare red extreme‑heat warning has been issued for England and Wales as temperatures are forecast to reach 40 °C in parts of southern England. The Met Office warned of a “very widespread threat” to public health, prompting more than 1,000 schools to close completely or operate on reduced hours over the next two days. Hundreds of schools are also adjusting schedules, relaxing uniform rules and providing extra water and shade. The UK Health Security Agency noted this is only the second time a red heat health warning has been issued, highlighting serious risks even to healthy adults. Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson urged parents to keep children in school where possible, stressing that each missed lesson disproportionately affects disadvantaged pupils. Community fundraisers in several counties have raised thousands of pounds to purchase portable air‑conditioning units and fans for affected schools. Travel disruptions are also expected as rail operators advise against non‑essential journeys.
