UK heatwaves drive surge in insect and spider bite inquiries

Rising temperatures and heatwaves in the United Kingdom have led to a significant increase in public interest regarding insect and spider bites. NHS England reported that website visits for advice on stings and bites reached 121,976 in July, a 35.2% increase from June. Hospital visits for insect and spider bites in England also more than doubled in May compared to April.

Experts are specifically warning about the false widow spider (Steatoda nobilis), noting that warmer conditions may help the species thrive. Because spiders are ectothermic, heat speeds up their metabolism and allows populations to build more quickly. While bites are generally not more severe than a wasp sting, searches for “false widow spider bites” have increased by 5,000% over the past month.

Health officials recommend that individuals seeking treatment for bites or stings consult community pharmacists for antihistamines, steroid creams, or antibiotics if an infection occurs. To reduce indoor spider activity, experts suggest maintaining window and door frames to close structural gaps.
