Although bites are generally compared to the severity of a wasp sting, searches for “false widow spider bites” increased by 5,000% over a one-month period.
As temperatures begin to cool following the heatwaves, authorities have issued warnings regarding the risk of spider infestations. Male house spiders and false widow spiders are reportedly seeking warm indoor shelter, particularly after dusk. To mitigate these risks, experts recommend sealing structural gaps in doors and windows and using deterrents such as peppermint or lavender essential oils.
