UK immigration rules and eVisa system cause migrant instability

Post-Brexit immigration changes and the transition to a digital eVisa system in the United Kingdom have created significant challenges for migrant communities and individuals. A study by researchers from Queen Mary University of London highlights that Latin Americans, many of whom previously utilized EU free movement rights via countries like Spain, face increased instability due to stricter visa rules and barriers to public funds.

Technical issues within the Home Office’s new digital system have also caused direct disruptions. In one instance, a legally settled UK resident was stranded at a Spanish airport after the eVisa system incorrectly linked her digital status to her identical twin sister. While the Home Office stated that over 10 million people have successfully used the system and that most errors are resolved within 24 hours, concerns persist regarding the accuracy of the digital transition and the potential for large-scale administrative errors affecting long-term residents.
