UK immigration rules and eVisa system challenges

The United Kingdom’s transition to a digital eVisa system and post-Brexit immigration changes have introduced instability for migrant communities. Research from Queen Mary University of London indicates that stricter visa rules and barriers to public funds have particularly impacted Latin American populations who previously utilized EU free movement rights.

Technical malfunctions within the Home Office’s digital platform have caused direct disruptions for residents. In a specific instance, Nidia Webb, a legal resident of the UK for eight years, was stranded at a Spanish airport after the system incorrectly linked her digital residency status to her identical twin sister. Webb was prevented from boarding her return flight because her digital identity could not be verified, describing the situation as a “known technical problem” affecting certain twins within the Home Office system. Although officials provided verbal assurances, a confirmation email was mistakenly sent to her sister, causing Webb to miss her flight and incur additional costs.

While the Home Office reported that over 10 million people have successfully used the system and that most errors are resolved within 24 hours, concerns remain regarding the accuracy of the digital transition.
