UK heatwave alert: Temperatures forecast to reach 36°C
The United Kingdom is bracing for its fifth heatwave of the year, with temperatures expected to reach as high as 36°C in parts of East Anglia and south-east England by Thursday. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued yellow heat-health alerts for much of England, including London and the Midlands, effective through Tuesday evening. These alerts warn of potential impacts on health and social care services, particularly for the elderly and vulnerable.
The incoming heatwave follows a period of extreme weather, including the driest July on record for England and Wales. Approximately half of England and all of Wales are currently experiencing drought conditions. The Environment Agency has noted that England has received less than 10mm of rainfall for seven consecutive weeks, leading to concerns regarding long-term environmental and economic impacts.
Water restrictions are already in place, with South West Water announcing a hosepipe ban affecting nearly 26 million people across central and southern England and Wales. Additionally, recent weeks have seen several large wildfires in locations such as Dunwich Heath, Headon Warren, Llanwonno, and the Cairngorms National Park. Earlier in the summer, record-breaking heatwaves in May and June were linked to more than 2,800 excess deaths.
