The perpetrator, a 23‑year‑old Sikh, was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 21 years. Police conduct during the incident has been criticised after officers handcuffed the victim and delayed medical aid. An independent police‑conduct inquiry and a coroner’s investigation are scheduled to begin in September.
