UK landline users face confusion over 2027 analogue switch-off

A survey commissioned by Community Fibre reveals that 45% of UK landline users are confused regarding the upcoming switch-off of the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), scheduled for 31 January 2027.

Many users remain unprepared for the transition from analogue to digital services. Research indicates that 53% of those who have not yet switched have taken no action to prepare, and only 12% have verified if their existing equipment will remain compatible with new IP-based services. The transition poses specific risks to vulnerable populations, as vital devices such as telecare alarms, personal emergency pendants, and security systems may require upgrades or replacement to function on digital networks.

Despite the rise of mobile technology, landlines remain significant for many households. Approximately 49% of respondents view landlines as important for emergencies, and 36% rely on them when mobile signals are unavailable. Concerns regarding the switch-off are high, with 71% of those surveyed stating they would be worried if a connected home device stopped working. Many respondents cited a lack of information and confusion over necessary changes as primary barriers to a smooth migration.
