UK PSTN analogue network switch-off

The United Kingdom is transitioning from its legacy copper-based Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) to a digital, Internet Protocol (IP)-based network, with the final shutdown scheduled for January 31, 2027.

To facilitate this migration, Openreach has introduced support initiatives, including free connections for many customers who split broadband and phone services between different providers. This effort aims to address the approximately 1.5 million lines that still require migration to modern platforms like VoIP or SOGEA hybrid broadband.

Despite these efforts, significant challenges remain. Research indicates widespread confusion among users, with a survey finding that 45% of landline users are unclear about the upcoming switch-off. Many individuals have taken no action to prepare, and only 12% have checked if their existing equipment is compatible with digital services.

The transition poses risks to critical infrastructure and vulnerable populations, as analogue-dependent devices—such as fire alarms, medical monitoring equipment, telecare alarms, and security systems—may fail if not properly upgraded. While mobile technology is prevalent, many users still rely on landlines for emergencies or in areas with poor mobile signals.
