UK Ministry of Defence seeks new jet trainers for RAF and Red Arrows

The UK Ministry of Defence has formally launched a Request for Information (RFI) to begin the procurement process for a new advanced jet training system. This program aims to replace the Royal Air Force’s current fast jet training fleet, including the Hawk T1 and Hawk T2 aircraft.

The Hawk T1, which has been used by the Red Arrows aerobatic team since 1979, is scheduled to be retired by the end of 2030. The new system must be capable of supporting the transition to fifth and sixth-generation air systems, such as the F-35 and the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP).

With the domestic Hawk production line closed, the competition is expected to feature international designs. Potential contenders include the Boeing T-7A Red Hawk, which has a teaming agreement with BAE Systems, as well as options from manufacturers like Saab and Leonardo. The Ministry of Defence has committed £360 million to the full recapitalization of the Jet Training System.
