UK military jet trainer procurement

Overview

The UK Ministry of Defence has initiated a procurement process to replace the Royal Air Force’s Hawk jet training fleet. This program aims to provide an advanced training system to support pilots transitioning to fifth- and sixth-generation combat aircraft, such as the F-35 and the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP).

The replacement will also include the Hawk T1 aircraft used by the Red Arrows display team, which is slated for retirement by the end of 2030 due to age and airframe fatigue.

To begin the process, the Ministry issued a Request for Information (RFI) to gather technical data and engage with manufacturers. The Ministry has committed £360 million to the full recapitalization of the Jet Training System. Because the domestic Hawk production line is closed, the competition is expected to involve international manufacturers, including potential designs from Boeing, Saab, Leonardo, Korea Aerospace Industries, and Turkish Aerospace.
