UK advances multiple small modular reactor projects

Last Energy, a U.S.‑based nuclear firm, has filed planning documents for the Llynfi Clean Energy Project in South Wales. The proposal seeks to install four 20 MW PWR‑20 micro‑modular reactors on the former Llynfi Power Station site, delivering up to 83 MW of heat. The company aims to submit a Significant Infrastructure Project application by July 2026 and hopes to have a nuclear site licence by December 2027, with construction slated for completion in 2027.

Polish‑led consortium SGE is planning a separate fleet of 14 BWRX‑300 small modular reactors for the United Kingdom. The 300 MW units would together provide 4.2 GW of electricity, enough to supply nearly eight million homes, with the first reactor expected to generate power by 2034. The design has passed stage 2 of the UK Generic Design Assessment, and the project is seeking private financing alongside Contract‑for‑Difference support. Site selection, detailed planning and funding agreements are expected to be finalised by mid‑2027.
