UK Parliament reintroduces assisted suicide bill for terminally ill adults

Labour MP Lauren Edwards has published the text of the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill, a re‑introduction of the assisted‑suicide legislation first proposed by Kim Leadbeater. The bill is largely unchanged, incorporating three minor amendments that were previously approved by the House of Lords. It is scheduled for a second reading in the Commons on 11 September, after which it will return to the Lords for further scrutiny.

The re‑launch has sparked debate over the possible use of the Parliament Acts to bypass the Lords, a move described as unusual and controversial. Humanist groups and individuals such as Victoria Denning, who faces a terminal diagnosis, have urged MPs to support the bill, arguing it would give dying people control over their deaths. Critics, including CARE and former MP Caroline Ansell, contend the bill is “flawed” and lack sufficient safeguards, calling for a focus on improving palliative and social care instead.
