UK Parliamentarians condemn US interference in Brazil election

Members of the UK Parliament, alongside trade union leaders and social justice campaigners, have issued a statement condemning alleged United States interference in Brazil’s upcoming presidential run-off election. The contest features progressive President Lula against far-right candidate Flávio Bolsonaro.

The statement expresses alarm over the Trump administration’s support for the Bolsonaro movement, citing economic and diplomatic pressures, including punitive tariffs and reported US funding for groups aimed at undermining Brazilian institutions. Concerns were also raised regarding US-based tech platforms potentially suppressing pro-Lula content.

Simultaneously, the Civil Society Working Group for the 2030 Agenda has issued an urgent call to the international community regarding threats to Brazil’s democracy and the rule of law. The group warned that the country’s ability to meet sustainable development goals depends on a transparent and peaceful electoral outcome, noting that previous years saw significant institutional paralysis and the erosion of social and environmental protections.
