UK pig industry focuses on sustainability and protein alternatives

The British pig industry is focusing on sustainability and environmental impact through feed innovation and strategic communication. Premier Nutrition has conducted trials using alternative protein sources to reduce the carbon footprint of pig production, which is heavily influenced by feed. One trial found that replacing soya with up to 25% field beans could reduce carbon dioxide equivalent per kilogram of deadweight by up to 30% without affecting pig performance. However, economic viability remains a challenge, as field beans currently require a price reduction of approximately £20-£30 per tonne to compete with soya.

Additionally, the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) is working to manage the industry's reputation regarding environmental standards and animal health. The AHDB highlighted that the sector has reduced its carbon footprint by 18% since 2008 through improved efficiency and feed management. The organization is also focusing on disease preparedness, specifically regarding African swine fever, through targeted communication campaigns to protect the national herd.
