UK police crackdown on shoplifting in Wales and London

Dyfed‑Powys Police in Wales charged two men, Connor Evans (28) and Tyler Jefferies (26), with a series of 19 shoplifting offences across Newtown, stealing goods worth about £1,000. The pair were arrested on June 8 and are due to appear in Welshpool Magistrates' Court.

In London, the Metropolitan Police reported that 104 repeat shoplifters were responsible for more than 5,300 offences over the past two years. The force, together with the British Retail Consortium and the Retail Trust, is urging the Home Office and Ministry of Justice to introduce fast‑track courts and stricter enforcement of criminal behaviour orders to curb repeat offences.

Both cases highlight police efforts to target a small number of individuals who account for a disproportionate share of shop theft and to improve the speed and severity of judicial responses.
