UK police prepared to ban masks at anti-migration protests
British police forces are preparing to use legal powers to ban face coverings during anti-migration protests. Deputy Chief Constable Andy Mariner, the National Police Chiefs’ Council’s lead for policing protests, stated that commanders are “absolutely ready” to use such legislation when circumstances allow.
This heightened stance follows warnings from Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood regarding tactics used by groups like Patriot Platform to intimidate communities. Law enforcement has increased intelligence-gathering and planning in response to recent incidents, including masked individuals blocking access to the Port of Dover and the damaging of official vehicles.
While Mr. Mariner noted that implementing these powers can be “tricky” for commanders on the ground due to various situational factors, he emphasized that officers will utilize the law to prevent criminality and anonymity during demonstrations.
