UK police seize illegal e‑bikes and e‑scooters, auction sparks controversy

East Lothian Police seized two Surron e‑motorbikes on 24 July in Musselburgh, stating the off‑road models are not road‑legal and must have registration plates, speedometers, mirrors, lights and a 30 mph limit. The force warned that riders need a provisional licence and CBT certificate and urged the public to report illegal use.

Northumbria Police in Sunderland took two e‑scooters from 13‑year‑old twins after a mother reported they were being used illegally in a park. Although initially told the scooters would be crushed, the police later listed them on the online auction site RAW2K. The mother complained, describing the action as "absolutely disgusting" and a "scam", and the police placed a hold on the sale pending investigation.

Both incidents highlight enforcement of UK rules that prohibit privately owned e‑bikes and e‑scooters on public roads, cycle lanes, pavements or parks, while allowing their sale for private‑land use.
