UK Police Watchdog Probes Bias in Henry Nowak Arrest Amid Anti‑Migrant Protests

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has expanded its inquiry into Hampshire Police's handling of the December murder of 18‑year‑old Henry Nowak in Southampton. The probe will assess whether officers who handcuffed Nowak while he was dying were influenced by nearby anti‑immigration protests at the Highfield House Hotel, located about 500 metres from the crime scene.

The investigation will review the officers' use of handcuffs, first‑aid provision and the decision to treat Nowak as a suspect, but it will not examine individual officer misconduct; the officers are being treated as witnesses. The review follows criticism from politicians and the public, who have called for a full misconduct inquiry.

Nowak was stabbed multiple times by Vickrum Digwa, who has since been sentenced for the murder. The surrounding area has seen ongoing anti‑migrant demonstrations since May, including previous arrests, dispersal orders and confrontations, creating a heightened climate of tension that the IOPC will consider in its assessment.
