Prime Minister Andy Burnham's government will issue a one‑off cash payment of £200 to state pensioners born before 1960, with a higher £300 amount for those over 80, later this year. The payment is linked to an income threshold of £35,000; pensioners earning above this level will initially receive the cash but it will be reclaimed by HMRC through their pension income. The scheme aims to support low‑income households while preventing higher‑earning retirees from receiving the allowance. Existing Winter Fuel Payments will continue unchanged.

The policy replaces earlier rules and follows revisions introduced under the previous administration of Keir Starmer and Rachel Reeves.
