UK Prime Minister announces VAT cut on domestic energy bills

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has announced that VAT on domestic electricity bills will be reduced from 5% to 0%, effective October 1, 2026. The policy aims to provide immediate relief for households facing cost-of-living pressures as winter approaches.

Officials estimate the measure will cost approximately £850 million during the 2026/27 period and is expected to save the average household roughly £45 per year. Additionally, the cut is projected to reduce inflation by about 0.10 percentage points. Energy suppliers are expected to pass these savings directly to consumers, including those on fixed tariffs.

To fund the initiative without introducing new taxes, the government plans to cancel a previous digital ID programme and reprioritise existing departmental budgets. Chancellor John Healey stated the move is intended to provide families with breathing room on their energy bills.
