UK Prime Minister faces pressure over health gaps and planning reforms

Campaigners are calling on Prime Minister Andy Burnham to implement legal duties to address a significant life expectancy gap across the United Kingdom. Analysis from the coalition Health Equals reveals that residents in certain areas, such as Marylebone and Berkhamsted, have a life expectancy of 88, while those in Glasgow and Grimsby face a gap of up to 18 years, with life expectancy dropping to 70.

Simultaneously, the Prime Minister’s proposed planning reforms are facing criticism from local leaders. Green Party leader Andrew Cooper has described the reforms as ‘deeply undemocratic,’ arguing that they would allow regional mayors to bypass local councils on large-scale housing and infrastructure projects. The proposal aims to empower mayors to override local planning decisions for developments exceeding 150 homes or specific commercial sizes to accelerate regional growth.
