UK Prime Minister faces pressure to increase defence spending

Prime Minister Andy Burnham is facing mounting pressure to increase United Kingdom defence spending to meet NATO commitments. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte is expected to address the Ditchley Foundation in Oxfordshire, where he will describe the UK as a country that is “serious about security” while emphasizing the need for further action to rebuild depleted armed forces.

NATO allies have agreed to increase defence spending to 5% of GDP by 2035 to counter threats from Russia and China. While UK spending is projected to reach approximately 2.7% of GDP by 2027, Mr. Burnham has cautioned that the government may struggle to reach an interim goal of 3% by 2030 due to public finance pressures and rising borrowing costs.

The Prime Minister has previously rejected cutting welfare spending to fund military increases, stating, “National security cannot come at the expense of social security.” However, Labour’s union backers, including Unite General Secretary Sharon Graham, are advocating for higher military investment as a means to support jobs and drive national reindustrialization.
