UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer backs Andy Burnham as Labour successor
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer announced his resignation and said Labour should win the next general election under Andy Burnham, who is widely expected to replace him as Prime Minister. In a BBC interview Starmer highlighted his record, citing the party’s handling of antisemitism accusations, the 2024 election victory and what he described as "stabilising the economy" over the past two years.
He emphasized that he holds no personal animosity toward Burnham, will remain an MP until the next election, and intends to support the incoming leader behind the scenes. Starmer said he will step down from No 10 as early as 20 July and will focus on serving his country until his departure.
