UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer explains resignation and warns successor Andy Burnham

Sir Keir Starmer has confirmed his decision to resign as Labour Party leader and British Prime Minister, describing it as an "intensely personal" choice made during a family weekend away. In his first interview since announcing his departure, he said he will remain a backbench MP and will keep quiet to allow his successor to lead.

Starmer cautioned that his successor, widely expected to be former Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, will inherit the same global and domestic challenges that dominated his own tenure. He warned, "No, I don’t think it is possible" for a future prime minister to spend less time on diplomacy, emphasizing the inseparability of international and domestic affairs. The remarks have sparked criticism from opposition figures over proposals such as a "No 10 North" unit.

Starmer also reflected on his four years in opposition before winning the 2024 general election, crediting his leadership with preserving Labour’s prospects. He expressed no personal animosity toward Burnham and pledged to support the next government’s success.
