UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer Resigns, JD Vance Calls for Leadership Change

Keir Starmer announced his resignation as British prime minister on 22 June 2026 after mounting pressure from within his cabinet and criticism of his defence‑spending plan. He will remain in office until the Labour Party selects a new leader, expected in September, ending a period that has seen six prime ministers in ten years.

U.S. Vice‑President JD Vance said the United Kingdom has been "failed by its leadership for a long time" and needs a structural overhaul. He expressed hope that Andy Burnham, the former Greater Manchester mayor and leading contender to succeed Starmer, or another candidate, will restore stability.

President Donald Trump also commented on the resignation, wishing Starmer well but noting challenges such as energy, immigration and crime that have weakened the UK's position.
