UK Prime Minister proposes regional mayoral control over water companies
Prime Minister Andy Burnham is proposing a plan to grant mayors greater oversight of water companies through the creation of nine regional bodies. These boards would include public health officials, customers, and environmental campaigners to set company objectives and collect customer feedback. The initiative follows criticisms of the water industry, which Burnham described as a “leaking monument” to past policy errors.
The proposal aims to increase local accountability regarding sewage pollution, water quality, and infrastructure investment. In Essex, Labour and Co-operative candidate for Mayor Adam Fox has supported the move, arguing that the first Mayor of Greater Essex must have a meaningful role in holding water companies to account to protect local rivers and coastlines.
The potential for increased regional control has already impacted financial markets. South East Water recently abandoned a bond issue due to investor hesitation following Burnham’s previous signals regarding support for nationalisation. While nationalisation is estimated by Defra to cost approximately £100bn, the proposed regional boards are intended to restore public trust and potentially strengthen the ability of companies to raise private capital by weakening the unilateral power of water executives.
