UK rail strike and heatwave service cuts disrupt commuters

The Transport Salaried Staffs’ Association (TSSA) announced industrial action for July 10‑11, affecting London Northwestern Railway and West Midlands Trains. The strike, driven by a dispute with the Department for Transport over rest‑day working arrangements, will see many routes reduced to one train per hour or cancelled entirely. TSSA General Secretary Maryam Eslamdoust warned the action would have a "significant impact" and emphasized it is a last resort.

Separately, East Midlands Railway warned passengers to travel only if essential during an impending heatwave with temperatures expected to exceed 35 °C. Services between Nottingham and Worksop and Nottingham and Leicester will be suspended from 12 p.m. on Wednesday, and other services will run at reduced speeds. Customer experience director Philippa Cresswell said the measures are needed to keep the railway operating safely amid risks of rail buckling and wires sagging.
