UK retail footfall declines 1.7% in August despite modest improvements

UK retail footfall saw a modest improvement in August compared to previous months, though total visits remained 1.7% lower year-on-year. While cooler temperatures helped bring shoppers out after a hot July, the overall trend remains in negative territory.

Regional performance varied across the United Kingdom. Footfall decreased by 2.1% in England and 1.3% in Wales, while Scotland saw a slight decline of 0.1%. Conversely, Northern Ireland experienced a 2.8% increase in visits. In Wales specifically, shopping centre footfall dropped by 1.7%, and Cardiff saw a 1.9% decrease.

Industry leaders from the British Retail Consortium and Sensormatic noted that while the pace of decline may be easing, retailers continue to face significant pressure. The British Retail Consortium has called for government action regarding business rates and energy costs to support high streets and help manage rising costs for households.
