UK retail trends and economic contraction forecasts

Overview

UK retail footfall experienced a year-on-year decline of 1.7% in August. While cooler temperatures provided a modest improvement compared to the previous month, the overall trend remained negative.

Regional data showed varied results: footfall decreased by 2.1% in England and 1.3% in Wales, while Scotland saw a 0.1% decline. Northern Ireland was an outlier, recording a 2.8% increase in visits. In Wales, shopping centre footfall dropped by 1.7%, with Cardiff seeing a 1.9% decrease.

In response to ongoing pressures, the British Retail Consortium (BRC) has called for government intervention concerning energy costs and business rates to support households and high streets. BRC CEO Helen Dickinson noted that retailers are facing a “dual challenge of rising costs and slowing demand.”

Economic forecasts suggest these retail trends may be part of a broader contraction. Economists from Investec and Pantheon Macroeconomics predict the UK economy likely contracted by 0.1% in July, a figure expected to be confirmed by the Office for National Statistics on September 11. This anticipated dip follows a 0.3% expansion in June.

Recent data from the BRC indicates that retail sales growth slowed to a four-month low in August, with the annual growth rate dropping to 0.7% from 1.3% in July. While food sales saw modest growth, non-food sales fell 0.2% compared to the previous year. Analysts suggest that while an uncharacteristic summer heatwave may have pulled forward some spending, most categories could not sustain that momentum as rising energy bills and operating costs continue to drive cautious consumer behavior.
