UK review finds widespread antisemitism in schools

An independent review commissioned by the British government has found that 60% of Jewish students in England have experienced antisemitic abuse while attending school. The report, led by former Ofsted chief inspector Sir David Bell, highlights a significant scale of prejudice and a lack of confidence in school authorities, with fewer than half of students who witnessed antisemitism believing administrators would take action.

To combat this, Sir David is expected to make 27 recommendations, including strengthening guidance on political impartiality. While not recommending a blanket ban, the report suggests schools should “consider the appropriateness” of political identifiers, such as pro-Palestine badges or watermelon symbols, to ensure teachers do not impose personal views on students during debates on geopolitical issues.

The review follows concerns regarding the safety of Jewish officials and reports of normalized antisemitic behavior, including Nazi salutes and swastikas, in certain educational settings.
