UK sees surge in small‑boat migrant gang arrests as arrivals halve

The UK Home Office reports a 74 % increase in arrests of suspected people‑smuggling gangs over the 12 months to March 2024, with roughly 1,900 arrests recorded. In the first quarter of 2024, 1,138 organised‑immigration‑crime disruptions were logged, up from 311 in the same period of 2023. The government has allocated an extra £100 million to the Border Security Command and pledged £280 million a year by 2028 to strengthen the system.

At the same time, arrivals of migrants on small boats have fallen sharply. By 9 July 2026, only 12 214 people had arrived, a 42 % drop compared with the same date in 2025. The decline mirrors a roughly 40 % year‑on‑year reduction in irregular crossings across Europe. Analysts say the reasons are unclear but point to new UK‑France enforcement arrangements, the “one‑in, one‑out” scheme, and broader EU‑North‑Africa partnership efforts as possible contributors.
