UK steel industry warns of dumping risk as import quotas rise
Tata Steel UK cautioned that the government's decision to enlarge tariff‑free steel import quotas for India and Vietnam could flood the British market with cheap steel, undermining domestic production and threatening thousands of jobs. The new allowances permit almost 300,000 tonnes of galvanized steel each year – roughly half of the Llanwern plant’s output – raising concerns that the UK could become a "dumping ground" for steel diverted from other markets.
The controversy extends to broader government actions on steel assets, which have unsettled foreign investors and heightened anxiety over the stability of the UK’s heavy‑industry sector. Analysts warn that unpredictable regulatory shifts, coupled with challenges in decarbonising heavy industry, may deter long‑term private investment and disrupt supply chains serving automotive, construction and defence manufacturers.
