Overview

In mid‑July 2026 the United Kingdom announced that its newly‑introduced steel safeguard measures under the India‑UK Free Trade Agreement would target only a modest share of Indian exports, about 15‑20 %, and were presented as a protection against dumping. A week later the European Union activated its own safeguard regime for stainless‑steel imports, allocating a 27.3 % quota to India while sharply cutting quotas for other suppliers such as Switzerland and the United Kingdom. European stainless‑steel makers protested, arguing that the “first‑come, first‑served” allocation disadvantaged EU producers and called for a revision.

On 24 July 2026 a coalition of Italian, French and Spanish manufacturers sent a letter to EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič reiterating their concerns and urging a reassessment of product‑14 quotas and the overall allocation method. The following day, Tata Steel UK warned that the UK government’s decision to enlarge tariff‑free import quotas for India and Vietnam – permitting up to 300,000 tonnes of galvanized steel each year – could turn Britain into a “dumping ground,” threatening domestic jobs, the stability of the British steel sector and confidence of foreign investors.
