UK toy safety crackdown sees 600 unsafe items seized; retailers urge parental responsibility

Trading Standards officers in Cleethorpes removed almost 600 illegal or unsafe toys, including soft toys and action figures that posed choking hazards or lacked proper CE marking, after a two‑day operation by North East Lincolnshire Council. Council spokesperson James Sawkins said the seizure protects residents and tourists during the busy summer season and highlighted breaches of the Toy (Safety) Regulations 2011.

In Shetland, retailers reported a growing problem of children destroying toys in stores, leading to losses of several pounds per incident. Store owners and managers called for parents to intervene and guide children’s behaviour, with some shops considering limits on the number of children allowed inside.
