UK trade unions urge Prime Minister Andy Burnham to address cost of living crisis

Ten major UK trade unions, representing over 2.3 million workers, have issued an open letter to Prime Minister Andy Burnham. The unions, including Unison, the National Education Union, and the RMT, are calling for more decisive action to address the escalating cost of living crisis.

The unions expressed concern regarding the government’s decision to authorize US airstrikes from British territories, such as RAF Fairford and Diego Garcia, as part of military actions involving Iran. They argue these conflicts are deepening the economic hardships faced by the British public, specifically regarding soaring energy and food costs.

In response to the economic situation, Prime Minister Burnham has announced a national tour to connect with citizens and has proposed cutting VAT on household energy bills. However, union leaders characterized the proposed energy relief as insufficient for the millions of low-income families currently struggling with food insecurity and extreme poverty.
